Benzoyl Peroxide Side Effects — And the Natural Acne Ingredients I Use Instead

Long before Leslie Morand became a Master Holistic Esthetician with nearly 30 years of experience training in France and the USA, she was a teenager staring at her own breakouts in the mirror, trying every product the drugstore shelf had to offer.

That early experience — and the three decades of clinical work with clients that followed, including years working alongside plastic surgeons and French skincare laboratories — is why one ingredient will never appear on a Leslie Morand Skincare label: benzoyl peroxide.

"I dealt with acne myself as a young adolescent, and it shaped how I think about blemish-prone skin to this day," said Morand, founder of the Solana Beach-based, hormone-safe, plant-based skincare line. "I saw dermatologist after dermatologist. I tried prescription drugs and prescription-strength ointments. And time after time, my skin got worse — more inflamed, more reactive, more broken out than before. It was that experience that set me on a completely different path."

"Over the last 30 years, I've helped countless clients work through their own breakouts — in my studio during holistic facials and through their at-home routines — and I've watched benzoyl peroxide get handed out as the default answer, often before anyone stops to ask what's actually causing the breakout in the first place."

Many of those clients came to me having already made the rounds with dermatologists — prescription retinoids, antibiotics, topical ointments — and were still struggling. Using my holistic facial methods and plant-based approach, I've been able to help lots of clients over the years, not just with acne and breakout-prone skin, but with aging skin concerns as well. The common thread is always the same: when you work with the skin's own intelligence rather than against it, the results are more lasting and the skin is healthier for it.

What Benzoyl Peroxide Actually Does to Skin

Benzoyl peroxide works by releasing oxygen into the pore, creating an environment that kills acne-causing bacteria on contact. It's effective at what it's designed to do. But that effectiveness comes with trade-offs that make it fundamentally incompatible with a hormone-safe, plant-based formulation philosophy:

  • It bleaches. Benzoyl peroxide is well known for oxidizing fabric — towels, pillowcases, hair — a visible sign of how reactive and indiscriminate the compound is on contact with organic material, skin included.
  • It strips the skin barrier. Regular use is widely documented to cause dryness, peeling, and irritation, which can paradoxically trigger more oil production and more breakouts as skin tries to compensate.
  • It doesn't discriminate between bad bacteria and good. It wipes out the bacteria contributing to a breakout alongside the beneficial microbes that keep the skin barrier balanced and resilient.
  • It's a synthetic oxidizer, not a botanical. For a plant-based line, an aggressive synthetic oxidizer simply has no place alongside the botanicals everything else is built around.

"None of this makes benzoyl peroxide 'bad' in some absolute sense — it has a legitimate place in dermatology for certain presentations," Morand said. "It simply isn't compatible with the barrier-respecting approach I built this brand around, and I don't believe most people reaching for a daily cleanser need something this aggressive to get clear, calm skin."

The Natural Alternatives Morand Formulates With Instead

Rather than overwhelming the skin into submission, Morand's approach — shaped by her clinical training and her ongoing work performing holistic facials in her Solana Beach studio — is to support the skin's own barrier function so it can regulate oil, bacteria, and inflammation on its own. Her formulations lean on natural actives that work with the skin rather than against it:

  • Willow bark extract — a naturally occurring source of salicin, which behaves similarly to salicylic acid, gently exfoliating inside the pore without the harsh, stripping effect of synthetic oxidizers.
  • Lactic acid — a gentle alpha-hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin's surface, smooths texture, and clears the buildup that leads to congestion, while remaining naturally humectant and far less irritating than harsher acids or oxidizers.
  • Tea tree and other antimicrobial botanicals — plant-derived compounds with natural antibacterial properties that address blemish-causing bacteria without wiping out the skin's beneficial microbiome.
  • Azelaic acid derivatives — naturally occurring in grains like barley and wheat, known for calming inflammation and evening out post-blemish discoloration without disrupting hormonal balance.
  • Niacinamide — a vitamin B3 derivative that helps regulate oil production and strengthens the skin barrier over time, rather than temporarily suppressing symptoms.
  • Centella asiatica (Cica) — a botanical long used in clinical and holistic skincare to calm irritation and support the skin's natural repair process.
  • Zinc-based ingredients — supportive of oil regulation and calming, without the oxidative harshness of benzoyl peroxide.

"This is the same philosophy behind our tagline — Purity, Potency, Peace of Mind," Morand said. "Potency doesn't have to mean aggression. These ingredients are genuinely effective against blemishes and congestion while still respecting the skin barrier and the body's hormonal balance."Peel in a bottle hyperpigmentation solution

The Routine Morand Recommends for Blemish-Prone Skin

For those transitioning off benzoyl peroxide or simply looking for a natural way to manage breakouts and congestion — whether as a standalone home routine or alongside regular holistic facials — Morand recommends building a routine around the following:

  • Purifying Cleanser. Lifts excess oil and impurities without stripping the barrier, so skin stays balanced rather than compensating with more oil.
  • Balancing Toner. Reestablishes pH after cleansing and preps skin to absorb what follows, instead of sitting on top of a disrupted barrier.
  • Facial Rejuvenating Peel Pads. Used two to three times a week, these deliver gentle, barrier-respecting exfoliation, clearing the buildup that leads to congestion without the peeling and irritation associated with harsher treatments.

"Used together, this is a routine built to work with your skin's own regulation system, not force a result through aggressive oxidation," Morand said. "And when paired with regular holistic facials, the results are even more lasting."

Why Natural Formulation Matters for Acne Specifically

"Acne is very often a hormonal story, not just a surface-level bacterial one," Morand explained. "Treating a hormonally-driven skin concern with a harsh oxidizing agent addresses the symptom on the surface while doing nothing for — and potentially working against — the underlying balance the skin is trying to achieve. A plant-based, barrier-respecting approach supports the skin holistically, which is the same philosophy I bring into every holistic facial I perform in my studio."

The Bottom Line

"Clearer skin doesn't require choosing between effective and gentle," Morand said. "I learned that lesson personally — through years of dermatologist appointments, prescription medications, and ointments that left my skin worse than when I started. My nearly 30 years of experience training in France and the USA, combined with hands-on clinical work alongside plastic surgeons and performing countless holistic facials, taught me that the most lasting results come from formulations that support the skin's own intelligence rather than override it. That's the standard every product in this line is held to, and it's why benzoyl peroxide will never be one of our ingredients."
